What this page is for

dicted's pricing page promises Unlimited voice typing and Unlimited smart actions on the Pro plan. This page explains exactly what "Unlimited" means, where the boundary actually sits, and how we handle the edge cases that a pricing page can't.

Two halves:

  1. Plan limits — the published numbers that are the contract for Free and the meeting feature on Pro. If a number is on this page, it is enforceable. If it isn't, there isn't one.
  2. What "Unlimited" means — the behavioural contract for the parts of Pro that have no number. We tell you up front what the product is built for, and what falls outside that scope.

We publish all of this in plain English because hidden fine print is what turns "Unlimited" claims into consumer-protection problems. There is no asterisk you have to dig for. The boundary is where this page says it is.

What "Unlimited" means

Pro voice typing and Pro smart actions are unlimited for interactive human use. That means:

  • Talk through emails all morning, dictate notes all afternoon, rewrite drafts in the evening — every day, every month, for as long as your Pro subscription is active.
  • Use any of the smart actions as often as you want, on as much text as you want, whenever you want.
  • Work across your devices freely (up to 3 signed in at the same time, with one active dictation session at a time).

There are no published numeric ceilings on legitimate Pro voice typing or smart actions. The product enforces silent abuse-stoppers against bot-rate, scripted, headless, or multi-person sharing patterns described under What falls outside "Unlimited" — these protect honest users from leaked-token abuse rather than functioning as caps on real human work. Real users never hit them; if you ever do, we contact you first (see How we enforce this). We do not auto-charge overage. The experience you get on day one is the same experience you get on day 365.

If you're an accessibility user who dictates eight hours a day, a journalist transcribing every interview, a doctor dictating every patient note, a writer talking through a book — you are exactly who Pro is for. Use it.

Voice typing

Pro plan includes voice typing on a fair-use basis intended for individual human use. Automated, scripted, headless, reseller, or shared-account use is not covered and may be rate-limited or suspended under our anti-abuse policy below. Dictation is gated by human-rate audio capture and human attention — Pro is built for the way real humans talk, all day, every day.

Smart actions

Pro plan includes smart actions (text rewriting, summarisation, translation, action-item extraction, tone shifting, and the other one-click transformations available from Ctrl-E or the overlay action menu) on a fair-use basis intended for individual human use. Automated, scripted, batch-processing, reseller, or shared-account use is not covered and may be rate-limited or suspended under our anti-abuse policy below. Each smart action is a manual gesture — you select text and choose an action — so the contract is the same shape as voice typing: one human, working interactively, as much as you want.

One person per account

A Dicted account represents a single individual. The concurrent-device limit on each plan (3 on Pro, 1 on Free) is there so one person can use Dicted across their own devices — phone, laptop, desktop — not to enable several people to share one subscription.

What "one person across multiple devices" looks like

All of the following are fully within the contract:

  • One person dictating from their iPhone in the morning, their MacBook through the workday, and their iPad in the evening.
  • One person who occasionally signs in from a friend's laptop, a hotel computer, or a borrowed device — and signs out when they're done.
  • One person whose work pattern naturally spans home, office, and the road, with all three devices registered to their account.

What is not covered

Sharing a single Dicted account between multiple people is not within the Pro plan, even when the device cap technically accommodates it. Specifically:

  • Multi-person household or office sharing — partners, family members, flatmates, or colleagues taking turns on one paid account, or using it simultaneously from different devices.
  • Credential sharing of any kind — handing your login details to anyone else, for any purpose, with or without compensation.
  • Reselling access — operating a "Dicted access" arrangement where you charge or trade with third parties for the use of your account.
  • "Dicted-as-a-service" intermediary use — running a transcription or AI-output service for clients on top of one Dicted subscription, dispatching their content through your account.

If multiple people in a household, office, or organisation want to use Dicted, each person needs their own account. A proper Team plan will exist when team features ship; until then, every individual user is an individual account. For pre-launch enterprise enquiries, email [email protected].

How we approach this

We do not read your dictation or meeting content to detect sharing — the signal is meta-pattern (concurrent activity across geographically distant devices, voice characteristics that change between sessions, headless markers, request shapes that suggest more than one person). Where a pattern looks like sharing or reseller use, we follow the same enforcement procedure described under How we enforce this below: contact first, demote processing priority next, and only escalate to account action for confirmed or unaddressed cases. Egregious or repeated breaches (confirmed credential resale, "Dicted-as-a-service" wrappers) may result in suspension or termination without refund.

This is a contractual rule, not a technical fence. We have deliberately not built invasive sharing-detection (no voice biometrics, no continuous device fingerprinting). The system relies on customers acting in good faith and on the contract being clear about what good faith means.

What falls outside "Unlimited"

dicted is built for one human using it interactively. The following patterns fall outside the Pro plan and we reserve the right to investigate, throttle, or suspend accounts that exhibit them.

Patterns that are not covered

  • Automated or scripted use — piping audio into the dictation pipeline programmatically, running the desktop overlay headless, batching files through a script, scraping desktop-client credentials to call the API directly, or otherwise driving the service without a human at the keyboard.
  • Reseller, wrapper, or white-label use — embedding dicted output inside a product you sell, running a transcription-as-a-service business on top of a single dicted subscription, or providing dicted-derived transcripts to third parties under a different brand.
  • Multi-account workaround — opening multiple Free or Pro accounts under different identities to bypass any cap on this page (including the meeting cap or the device cap).
  • Multi-person account sharing — a Dicted account is licensed to one individual (see One person per account above). The 3-device cap on Pro is to let one person work across their phone, laptop, and desktop — not to let several people share a single subscription. Household, office, team, or organisation sharing of one account is not covered, regardless of whether the device cap is breached. A proper Team tier will exist when team features ship; until then, email [email protected] for early enterprise needs.
  • Credential sharing or resale — handing your login details to anyone else, selling or trading account access, or operating a "Dicted-as-a-service" wrapper for third parties on top of one subscription.
  • Bot or non-human request patterns — request shapes that do not match human-rate usage: unbroken 24-hour activity, perfectly periodic timing, identical-content batches, machine-rate concurrency, headless-process signatures, and similar.
  • Content you do not have the right to transcribe — other people's recordings uploaded without consent, copyrighted media for redistribution, anything that violates our Terms of Service.

What is NOT abuse

So that the list above does not have a chilling effect, here is what normal use looks like — all of which is fully covered by Unlimited:

  • An accessibility user dictating ten hours a day, every day.
  • A professional voice-typist using dicted as a primary input method.
  • A user with a long backlog of meeting recordings, uploading within the 100-hour monthly pool.
  • One person using Dicted across all three of their devices — phone, laptop, and desktop — at different times of day.
  • Power users running every smart action on every paragraph of long documents.
  • Heavy use that varies hour-to-hour and day-to-day in the way real human work varies.

Rule of thumb: does a human attention span account for the load you're generating? If yes, you're fine. If you're driving the product faster than a human could click, that's the line.

How we enforce this

We do not silently throttle, and we do not surprise-charge. The procedure is always the same:

  1. Pattern logging. We log request shape — rate, source, timing, identity signals, headless-process markers. We do not read your dictation or meeting content for enforcement purposes; the abuse signal is meta-pattern, never what you said.
  2. Periodic review and contact. Our team reviews usage patterns regularly. If something looks like one of the patterns above, we email you first — heavy real users (accessibility power-users, professional voice-typists, journalists with high meeting volume) are routinely flagged and immediately cleared after a brief exchange. We do not act on a signal without giving you a chance to explain.
  3. Processing-priority demotion. If a pattern looks consistent with abuse and we have not been able to clear it with you, we may demote your account's processing priority — your work still completes, it just takes longer. You'll see an in-app notice when this happens, with a link back to this page.
  4. Account action. Only for confirmed cases (proven bots, confirmed reseller behaviour, confirmed multi-account fraud, or no response to our outreach over a reasonable period) do we suspend or close an account. You get an email with the specific reason and a path to contest the decision.

If you reach 100% of any published cap (Free 2 hours voice typing, Pro 100 hours of meeting audio, etc.), new work in that category pauses with a clear upgrade prompt. No work that was already started is interrupted, and nothing already saved is touched. You can wait until the next billing cycle or upgrade — your call, no surprise charges either way.

Our commitment: caps only move up

The published numbers above are the floor for the term you have already paid for.

  • Annual subscribers: the caps published on the day you subscribed will not decrease for the duration of your annual term. If we need to adjust them for business reasons, adjustments apply at your next renewal with at least 30 days' email notice, and you can decline by cancelling.
  • Monthly subscribers: caps will not decrease during your current billing cycle. Changes from your next cycle are announced at least 30 days in advance.
  • Free users: we will not retroactively tighten the Free plan such that features you previously had disappear. Any change to the Free plan applies to new accounts only.

If we break any of the above, you are entitled to a pro-rata refund for the unused portion of the term in which the reduction occurred, and to cancel without notice.

This is a scoped promise, not an unlimited-forever guarantee. It protects the value of what you actually paid for.

Device and session rules

  • Pro: up to 3 concurrent signed-in devices. When you sign in on a fourth, the oldest active session signs out automatically — no "too many devices" error.
  • Free: 1 signed-in device at a time. Signing in on a second device automatically signs out the first.

1 active dictation session at a time. Whichever of your devices is signed in, only one can stream audio to the server at any given second. When you start dictating on a second device, the first device's session is taken over (Spotify-style), with a ten-second grace window so brief Bluetooth or terminal reconnects do not kick you out.

Lifetime device registrations are not limited — buying a new laptop and deregistering the old one is normal and expected.

Questions

Email [email protected] if you have a genuine high-volume need that bumps against a published cap (especially the Pro meeting pool), or [email protected] for anything enterprise-scale. We would rather build a proper plan with you than enforce a ceiling we could simply lift.
